The Future of Freight starts here

Autonomous HGVs are moving from concept to commercial reality. Driverless freight is already operating in controlled environments, the UK is now approaching large-scale on-road trials.

Voltempo Autonomous is at the centre of this transition

Through our Voltempo Autonomous programme, we are leading UK research, working with fleet operators, OEMs and Government to define real-world use cases, safety frameworks and commercial models for autonomous freight deployment.

Our work goes beyond theory. We are designing and delivering UK trials, shaping regulation, and building the operational infrastructure required to support autonomous HGVs at scale.

For fleet operators, this is a pivotal moment. Early engagement will define who leads – and who follows – as the economics of freight are fundamentally reshaped.

Autonomous HGVs Will Transform Logistics
Why forward-thinking fleet operators are engaging now

Autonomous freight is not a distant future, it is an imminent commercial reality. Fleets that engage early shape the market and capture first-mover advantage.

The sector faces a structural driver shortage. Over 150,000 HGV drivers are expected to retire in the next decade, with insufficient new entrants to replace them. Whilst autonomous HGVs will never replace every driver, autonomy directly addresses this constraint while unlocking new operating models.

At the same time, the economics are compelling. Higher utilisation, reduced labour dependency and improved efficiency combine to deliver transformational cost savings and productivity gains. In an industry where profit margins are squeezed to the minimum, autonomy promises significant productivity gains with 30-45% improvements to the bottom line.

Trials are already being planned, and commercial deployments will follow quickly. Operators who wait risk being locked out of early routes, partnerships and funding opportunities.
